It was a real privilege to edit the official trailer for ‘Kindling’, a captivating, heartwarming film about a young man who after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, decides to make the most of the summer with his closest friends.
Kindling, Official Trailer
The challenge was how to convey the essence of the story in a package that made sense in its own right, whilst not giving away any major plot points. We also wanted to reflect the tone of the film as one that celebrates friendship, family and connection.
We worked closely with the film’s director, Connor O’Hara, to craft a clear structure - the introduction to set the scene, tone and characters, the middle section to build energy and introduce the dramatic tension, and the ending to focus on the feelings of connection and encapsulate main character’s journey. The wonderful, bespoke music written by the film’s composer really elevates the piece and fits perfectly.
The trailer has proved very instrumental in supporting the sales and marketing of the film, which had a theatrical release in the UK, and has picked up 3 festival nominations to date along with a US distribution deal.
“Working with David on the edit for Kindling’s trailer was a truly collaborative and creative experience. He gauged instantly the tone of the film and worked tirelessly to ensure that this was implemented into the trailer in all aspects; song choice, edit and feel. We would work with Retrograde again in a heartbeat.”
“David’s keen eye for detail and ability to capture the essence of the story were instrumental in creating captivating and engaging visuals that effectively showcased the film’s unique qualities. David’s creativity and understanding of storytelling greatly contributed to the film’s success.”
